About Cheshire East
Cheshire East is ideally positioned in the north west of England, north of Staffordshire, south of Manchester and Liverpool, with great 360° connectivity through national rail links and strategic highway network.
Our borough’s enviable assets include a strong and vibrant economy, jobs and attractive places to live as well as its heritage.
Cheshire East is renowned as a green borough, comprising rural areas, including part of the peak district, market towns, villages and the major urban centres of Crewe and Macclesfield.
The borough has one of the most successful and resilient economies in the UK valued at over £12bn. Gross Value Added (GVA) per head is 27% higher than the UK average. Cheshire East is home to more than 20,000 businesses and is location of choice for several internationally important companies including: Bentley, Waters, Astra Zeneca, Barclays, Royal London and Mornflake. We also have a strong visitor economy, valued at more than £920m.
Our Local Plan, adopted in July 2017, will ensure that the unique character of Cheshire East’s places is retained whilst enabling good economic growth and the provision of a wide range of homes, including those for an increasing number of families and young people.
Our borough is home to 378,800 residents. Whilst we have a smaller than average working age population, more people are in work with a low 3.2% unemployment rate. Those who are employed earn higher than average earnings.
Most residents enjoy a good standard of living, but there are pockets of deprivation. Average life expectancy varies from 74 years in the most deprived areas to 83.3 years in the most affluent.
Our 65+ population is larger than average and, following national trends, we see increasingly complex needs across all age ranges. Similarly, we have seen an increase over recent years of children coming into care, with approximately 500 children currently being fostered or in other care arrangements. We are in a strong position to investigate new ways of working to address these challenges.
We’re proud of the achievements of our schools, colleges, students and pupils. 89% of our schools are rated as Good or Outstanding. Nearly half of our working age residents are educated to NVQ Level 4 equivalent or above.
